CHAPTER 7

While he pulled down the folded ladder that led to the attic, I tried to calm my breathing and slow my heart. I did not want to go up there.

When William opened the door, stale, musty air rushed out. The cold breeze sent chills up my spine, making me dread this even more. My face must have shown how I was feeling.

William took a hold of my hand and, looking straight in my eyes, said, “You can do this. I’ll be with you the whole time.”

His reassurance helped somewhat, although I was still scared half out of my wits. Somehow, though, I found myself placing one foot on the rung of the rickety ladder after him and climbing up into the attic.

When my head was above the opening, I paused so my eyes could readjust. The only light that shone in the attic came from the small, five-sided window at the opposite end. I could only make out the shadows of boxes, old furniture, and piles of clothes.

As I lifted myself up and onto the wooden floor, I said, “How are we going to find anything in here with no light?”

William turned his head, then walked over to the corner. I was glad he could see in here, because I sure couldn’t. He turned on an antique floor lamp.

“This should help,” he said. “We had better get moving, though. There’s probably only an hour of daylight left. I’ve never been up here after dark, but I’m sure we don’t want to be.”

“That’s not a very comforting thought,” I replied.

I hated being in here right now. I didn’t even want to imagine what would happen at night when the entity came out. While William started searching through a box near the window, I picked one up lying next to me. It was stuffed with old papers, but I could tell by the yellowing they had been there for a while, well before Aunt Mallory.

Only a few minutes later, I heard William exclaim, “I found it!”

I was elated to hear that. The sun was starting to set, and it was getting darker. “Great!” I said. “Let’s get out of here now. We can look at it downstairs.”

I turned around to walk back towards the ladder, when something stopped me dead in my tracks. I saw a bright, glowing light in front of me. As it started to move and take shape, I realized it was the outline of my aunt. Her arms reached out towards me, almost beckoning me.

William came up behind me and grabbed my arms at the elbows.

“Ignore it. It’s trying to trick you. Just get out of here as fast as you can.”

I couldn’t move my feet. I knew I had to get out of there, but I was frozen with terror. Even though this thing before me looked like my aunt, knowing it was something sinister made my blood run cold. I felt William’s hand push me forward, urging me to move. Not looking at the false apparition of my aunt, I ran to the opening of the door and rushed down the ladder.
